Excavating beside a foundation is one dig that enables several fixes: perimeter drains, waterproofing, grading. When to combine them and what the work involves.

The short answer: if you are opening the ground beside your foundation for any reason, do every below-grade job that matters while the trench is open: perimeter drains, foundation waterproofing, downspout tie-ins and surface regrading. The excavation itself is most of the cost of each of those fixes, so combining them means paying for the dig once instead of two or three times. Why is foundation excavation the expensive part?

What does a perimeter drain replacement involve?

Excavating to the footing around the affected walls, rebuilding the drainage system, and closing the trench in the right order. On a typical Fraser Valley drainage excavation job the sequence runs:

  2. Old system removed. Failed pipe, clay tiles on older homes, silted rock and saturated backfill come out.

What should you combine with the dig while the wall is exposed?

The strongest candidate on that list is waterproofing.
